Objectives

On a yearly basis members of the Woodbury Shade Tree and Sidewalk Committee identify potential planting sites. Planting sites are determined by either a request of an adjoining property owner, a request to plant a tree as a memorial, or a replacement of a tree that had been previously removed.

Trees are planted in the Town of Woodbury’s right-of-way. Tree species range from large shade trees to small and medium ornamental and flowering types. All tree species that are planted are considered to be “Street Tree Tolerant”. This being that these species can withstand adverse environmental conditions associated with the plantings along the streets edge, such as road salts, lack of water, and unfavorable air emissions from cars. The diversity of the species planted will insure longevity of the trees planted and will assist in the long term maintenance.

Newly planted trees are watered, correctively pruned, and maintained for the life of the tree to insure its health and vigor. This continued maintenance will reduce the costs associated with the caring for sick, diseased, and improperly pruned trees in the future. This will decrease the over-all maintenance costs of the trees for the Town.

Yearly, the Committee solicits competitive bids from contractors proficient in the trade of arboriculture to perform work such as digging trees from the nursery, planting trees at newly designated sites and maintaining trees.

The Committee solicits money from local businesses and citizens through fund raising and mailing solicitations.. Assistance in the mailing of the fund raising materials are made by the local senior citizens. Respondents to the solicitation are recognized by the Committee by displaying their names on a handmade poster displayed in the Town’s office building. Students at the Nonnewaug High School’s Ellis Clark Vo-Ag. Program assist in tree pruning and maintenance. The Committee selects a student who wished to further their education into the field of Urban Forestry to work as an intern for the Committee. The student-intern assists in all facets of the tree program and is compensated by the Committee for their efforts.
